Welcome to Opuwo, the gateway to Kaokoland. Kaokoland is one of the last remaining wilderness areas remaining in Africa and a region of stunning beauty. It is home to the Himba, traditional semi-nomadic herders who follow and ancient way of life, in addition to Herero, Ovahakaona and Zemba-Dhimba. These groups remain largely isolated from the modern world, and entering their world can be difficult for visitors.
The Kaoko Information Center provids information and experienced guides who offer genuine insight into this spectacular region, its wildlife, and its people. With a local guide, you will see a traditional way of life nearly gone from the modern world, through the eyes of those who live it. The guides will accompany you in your own vehicle and show you the places the books don't mention, extraordinary wildlife, and breathtaking scenery, with the assurance that comes from having a local guide and interpreter. In addition to visiting traditional communities, we can also arrange journeys to Epupa Falls, Ruacana Falls, the Marienfluss Valley, and other destinations. While most of these are accessible by regular cars, the Kaoko Information Center has a Toyota 2.8 diesel double cab available for rent.
