Smolart group was established in 1990, the group is supported by members carvers and was established under the Ministry of Culture and Social Services of Kenya and started full operations in March 1994, with an objective of marketing products directly to the market instead of using middlemen who were exploiting producers by paying poor prices. The group wanted to empower their members economically and socially. Due to many obstacles it didn't take off until 1994.
Smolart mission seeks to improve the livelihood of its members through marketing of its Soapstone products, and improving the education, health shelter and environmental well being of its members. The vision of the group is to be a leading high quality soapstone handcraft producer and exporter in Kenya.
Smolart also stimulates home industries, improve quality, designs of handcrafts, unify prices of various crafts and also market the products on both local and international market. Above all it assists community based projects to improve health, education, shelter, environmental conditions, donate to charitable organizations and AIDS awareness campaign.
Marketing approach by Smolart is through sample production and soliciting the market through catalogues pictures and real sample. Before samples are released to the market they are to satisfy designer's guidelines, quality control and up to date document of standards and dimensions.
It has trading partners from Europe, New Zealand, Australia and the USA and the rest of Africa. The group members have been empowered economically to improve shelter, health and contribute to community projects e.g. schools, churches, orphanage, homes etc.
To become one of the major producer and exporter of its handcrafts by maximizing on quality and sustainability of the group through export sales, local sales and production of new samples is what Smolart is geared towards.
