Gpower is a Non Governmental Organisation registered with the Kenyan NGO Co-ordination Board. The organisation's foundation was inspired in 2002 by engineers Robert Mutsears from the Netherlands, Nyaga Ndiga from Kenya and several communities on the slopes of Mt. Kenya which had taken the initiative to set up CBOs (Community Based Organizations) to advance micro-hydro electrification.
Less than a year later Gpower laid the first cornerstone towards the realisation of its Rural Energy Access Model in Thiba, Kirinyaga District, which since March 2005 provides sustainable power to more than 200 rural households.
With results becoming progressively more visible and tangible as in Thiba, Gpower's activities began to attract increasing interest, not only from an overwhelming number of surrounding communities but also from international research and funding institutions (especially UQAM, Echoing Green, Ashoka Foundation and Linklaters) who through their expertise have become firm and vital partners in moving forward the successful implementation of the 1st Rural Energy Access Model in Kenya.
Today Gpower is an established NGO employing over 15 full time employees working with 1000nds of community members and partnering organisations in Central and - since early 2008 - also in Western Province, Kenya.
