The Field Study Centre is an integral part of Elsamere and was established in 1989. It continues the conservation work started by the Adamsons and offers a wide range of educational programmes for teachers, pupils and community leaders. The Centre is also frequently host to important conferences and research seminars concerned with local, national and international conservation issues. The Centre provides dormitory accommodation for up to 56 students with an additional 4 cottages for staff as well as a large well equipped conference room and laboratory. The FSC team can provide an interesting range of organised environmental activities on site including bird watching, nature walks and tree planting as well as visits to local areas of conservation interest such as Hells Gate and Nakuru National Park. If preferred, teachers or group leaders may arrange their own programmes using the available Kitchen Garden facilities. Day visits are also catered for and backed up by outreach visits to local schools. Elsamere, the home of Joy and George Adamson (pictured above), is situated on the southern shore of Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Rift Valley. It was here that Joy nurtured some of her orphaned big cats. The area is still a haven for wildlife, with its own small troop of black and white colobus monkeys living and playing in the Acacia trees. Fish Eagles call from the lake shore and hippos, eland and zebra graze on the lawns at night. In addition the Centre is a bird lovers paradise with more than 260 species of bird including rare species such as the Verreaux's Giant Eagle Owl. The Adamson's devoted their lives to wildlife conservation and Elsamere carries on their work. Many of Joy's paintings adorn the walls of the main house and the small museum displays a range of interesting memorabilia. The Landrover in which George was shot as he drove from his camp in Kora National Park to rescue a guest who had been captured by Somali bandits, is on view in the garden.
