CONSEDI is a Burundian NGO working effectively in Burundi's civil war for over a decade. It has run relief and reconstruction efforts for the World Food Programme, the International Labor Organization, and has partnered with several well-known international NGOs. CONSEDI has matured professionally through these experiences and has begun to secure its own funding for projects of its own design, based on its intimate knowledge of the countrys unmet needs and the complexity of social relations following the long war. It works in five of the countrys worst affected regions, so selected given the protracted challenge of returning refugees who lost their land during the war, and who are now subject to intense discrimination because they fled. Socio-economic reintegration for boys and girls directly affected by conflict or previously associated with fighting forces. This is a continuation and geographical expansion of CONSEDI core work over the last three years. Communities and returning youth come together to devise local projects some reconstruction of infrastructure, others income generating for collaboration between youth groups with different experiences during the war. CONSEDI provides raw materials and supervision for these community-led projects. Economic renewal activities for girl survivors of sexual violence. Vocational training in market-relevant skills through direct apprenticeship is then followed by a start-up package of necessary tools and materials to launch an independent small business. Many graduates of the program choose to partner together, creating an efficient division of labor among the team. CONSEDI locates project participants in existing technical training schools, where they learn specific skills and integrate with normal youth, beginning a long process of regaining their self-confidence through socialization and increasing economic independence.
