Savanna Trust is an arts-for-development organisation founded in 2006. It explores and implements programmes that compliment existing community interventions by using arts for development initiatives and strategies like theatre, radio and film/video. Savanna Trust empowers communities with information on various socio-economic and political issues, enhancing community participation in processes that help them make informed decisions. This is achieved through the use of theatre. The Trust also runs capacity building programmes for community based arts groups on how to effectively use theatre to communicate socio-economic and political messages to the grassroots (theatre for development).
So far, 25 communities based theatre groups in 5 provinces of Zimbabwe have been trained as part of the capacity building program. Savanna Trust also focuses on skills enhancement for theatre practitioners in response to the changing trends of the profession. The Trust initiates arts programmes that involve the grassroots communities in identifying the root causes of the socio-political and economic problems that affect them and encourage them to find lasting solutions to these problems. Every month, in Harare, Mashonaland West, Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South, Savanna Trust, through community based theatre groups do performances and festivals that attract people. These platforms are used for information dissemination.
