For the last 13 years Riders has been working with the Ministry of Health to mobilise Environmental Health Technicians (EHTs) throughout the country. Based at district health facilities, these EHTs provide preventative health care including disease control, immunisation, hygiene inspections, health education and water sanitation.
In 2010, Riders introduced a Sample Transport programme in partnership with The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and is initially operating in Zimbabwe's three urban centres - Harare, Bulawayo and Chitungwiza. This new model is specifically designed to reduce the delay in diagnosing diseases like HIV and tuberculosis. Situated just outside Harare, Riders also runs the International Academy of Vehicle Management (IAVM). Opened in 2002, the IAVM forms a key part in Riders programme of training and building a culture of maintenance in Africa. Riders is an award-winning social enterprise. We are working to make sure all health workers in Africa have access to reliable transportation so they can reach the most isolated people with regular and predictable health care.
Riders have bought their own skills and experience of working with motorcycles and four- wheeled vehicles to help solve one of the great problems for development: transportation. Riders realised that both governments and the market were failing to provide effective transportation for the delivery of vital services. Riders work focuses on providing a solution to this single problem. By combining the appropriate technology with new systems for looking after it, Riders have created a solution to the problem of a lack of transportation which is sustainable, replicable and scalable. By providing training programmes for technicians, mechanics and fleet managers, Riders is building capacity in Africa and is developing a lasting infrastructure for the future.
