Nutritional and Herbal Education and Support Trust (NHEST) Zimbabwe
Nutritional and Herbal Education and Support Trust (NHEST) Zimbabwe is a trust that seeks to improve community health, nutrition and food security. Health wise, it intends to meet the above objective through, inter alia, educating communities on (sustainable and conservation and organic-oriented agricultural practices) sustainable gardening practices and healthy living skills. On nutrition, NHEST offers advice on combating malnutrition and the beneficial use of nutrients in plants (Phytotherapy) in order to limit the serious side effects which most commonly prescribed drugs cause. NHEST seeks to promote the revival of natural therapies. Prevention and cure of disease lies largely in proper diet. Nutrition gardens projects ushers in livelihood opportunities such as beekeeping and candle-making, poultry projects, fish farming, vermiculture etc. NHEST devised a sustainable livelihood/s model to address income generation both at micro and macro levels. Climate change is going to adversely affect crop production. There is therefore need to come up with ways to conserve our soils and water while at the same time employing technologies that conserve water (drip irrigation system and/ or trench gardening) and use of organic fertilizers/ animal manure to increase crop yields. The departure point here will be sustainable, simple and affordable water harvesting techniques.
