Uganda Heritage Roots was started in 2003 as a not-for-profit organization that used Ugandan traditional performing arts to rehabilitate street children, orphaned children, children displaced by war and other vulnerable young people in Kampala and its suburbs. With the financial support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Uganda, we started by creating piecemeal music, drama, dance and folklore programs for children who were already under rehabilitation with other established organisations specifically Cornerstone Uganda, Tiger's Club and Kampiringisa Rehabiliation Center. We used Music dance and drama classes first as an activity that would give the children joy, as well as keep them busy and therefore less distractive; the activities would also boost their confidence and improve their discipline, thus making them better inclined towards other programs such as mainstream education.
