Since 1998, Rufiji Environment Management Project (REMP) has promoted long term conservation through balanced use of the lower Rufiji forests, woodlands, and wetlands. Key Activities and Innovations: REMP works to conserve biodiversity, maintain critical ecological functions, sustainably use renewable resources and secure the livelihoods of the area's inhabitants. Working closely with district authorities, communities and other stakeholders, REMP has taken important steps in developing an environmental management plan at district and village levels. Other activities include awareness raising, training of communities in sustainable fisheries, beekeeping, and tree planting. Government cooperation and community enthusiasm have combined to forge a more sustainable future for Rufiji.
