Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd. (CHICOP) is a small company that created and operates a Marine Park, a Forest Reserve and an Ecolodge on formerly uninhabited Chumbe Island and its western fringing coral reef, eight miles (13 km) southwest of Zanzibar, Tanzania. The company was established in 1992 to create and manage the Chumbe Reef Sanctuary. Its reef is among the healthiest in the region, with 370 species of fish and over 200 species of stony corals, 90% of all recorded in the region. CHICOP aims to create a model of sustainable conservation area management where ecotourism supports conservation and education. Thus CHICOP's objectives are not-for-profit, while operations follow commercial prinicples. Profits from the ecotourism operations are reinvested in conservation area management and free island excursions for local schoolchildren and other programs.
