The Coordinating Assembly of Non-Governmental Organizations (CANGO)
CANGO is the acronym for the Coordinating Assembly for Non Governmental Organisations. CANGO is an umbrella organization of over 60 Non Governmental Organizations in Swaziland. This organization was founded in 1983 initially as a Coordinating Secretariat for NGOs involved in the promotion of primary health care under the name: The Coordinating Assembly of Non Governmental Organizations in Primary Health Care. In 1987, the constitution was amended to enable this organization to encompass all NGOs in development, thus becoming a true National Umbrella body for all NGOs. More than ten years since its formation, CANGO has developed into quite a strong Secretariat with an increased capacity. Tasks have also increased in accordance with the demands of member NGOs. In 2001, CANGO embraced a strategic shift to play a key role in influencing the poverty environment in Swaziland. Current programmes are geared towards building the capacity of civil society to engage policy. Mandate Coordination, building capacity and policy influence advocacy. Objectives * To facilitate a forum that facilitates capacity building and dialogues for identifying issues of concern issues of concern affecting the marginalized. * To facilitate a coordinated NGO development program. * To serve as a facility for receiving, processing and sharing information to benefit CANGO stakeholders * To engage advocacy and lobby decision makers, government and cooperate partners for concerns of the disadvantaged * To foster strategic partnership
