Glass is made of completely natural materials, and can be reused and recycled repeatedly without losing its strength. With this in mind, it's a transgression to simply discard something that has the potential to help reduce South Africa's carbon footprint burden by simply choosing to recycle it.
The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) is an industry initiative that shoulders the responsibility and is mandated with the promotion of re-use and recycling of glass containers in South Africa. Established as a result of a memorandum of understanding signed in May 2005 between the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and the glass manufacturers and fillers TGRC is making steady inroads and has increased recycling volumes by more than 120% in the last five years.
Not just responsible for growing glass recycling, TGRC is also committed to job creation in both the formal and informal sectors, an undertaking achieved through the establishment of entrepreneurs and small businesses. The job-creation component of TGRC's mandate is as imperative to its core focus as its environmental concerns and community initiatives
