Summerstrand Hotel Corporate Social Investment committee has adopted Edu-care Centre/Sipho Thando Reach Out and Touch Programme as another charity to support.
Missionvale is well known as the poorest of the poor areas, with shacks and only a handful of RDP houses. The Twinkle Edu-care Centre/Sipho Thando Reach Out and Touch Programme, was founded by a community member, Mrs Jean Williams. Mr Williams and her volunteers run a soup kitchen for approximately 400 children in the area, and also home visits for members of the community who have TB and HIV. The Summerstrand team was recently involved in a day's activity where we donated soup mix as well as handing out sweet packs, cup cakes and clothes that the staff had donated.
During our visit we found that their water had been cut which made it difficult for Jean to make the soup for the 400 children that rely on them for sometimes their only meal of the day. Our Corporate Social Investment committee immediately resolved to adopt them as one of the charities that we support and settled their outstanding utilities account.
Latita Community Soap Project
Summerstrand Hotel is offering soap from The Latita Community Soap Project in it's rooms - Calabash Trust is a non profit organization established in 1999 and based in Port Elizabeth. Its aim is to make tourism work for the disadvantaged communities in the city where thousands of children live below the poverty line. Latita community soap project is based in Joe Slovo and Emafini Primary Schools, the people working on the project are parents who have been identified by the student governing body of these two schools.
Summerstrand Hotel is assisting in this project by offering mentorship in Management, Accounting and Marketing as well as being the very first client of Latita, whose soap we will be offering in our rooms as one of the range of guest amenities.
