Kivu Dairy is Rwanda's first private milk collection center, jointly owned by the local dairy cooperative in Gisenyi (CODERU) and social business builder Rwanda ventures. Kivu Dairy provides training and capacity building for farmers, enabling them to improve the quality and productivity of their cows. Farmers deliver milk to Kivu Dairy, which tests, chills, and delivers it in bulk to the largest dairy processor in Rwanda. This quality control enables Kivu Dairy to sell the milk for a premium over market prices. This revenue is shared with farmers, providing the financial incentive for them to maintain milk quality and increase capacity. Kivu Dairy is a social enterprise and seeks to combat malnutrition in Rwanda by making milk affordable. Kivu Dairy guarantees farmers a premium price for higher-grade milk, and offers them training courses to improve the quality of what their cows produce.
