The Akilah Institute is a self-sustainable vocational training and leadership institute located in Bugesera, Rwanda catering to motivated young women who have completed secondary school. The institute provides students with a holistic education incorporating leadership development, practical training, and entrepreneurial skills. The institute focuses on hospitality, which is identified as the leading industry in Rwanda, and prepares women for future employment within it. Its self-sustainability is achieved by running a dairy farm and selling dairy products in the local market in Kigali. The school, which opened on February 2nd 2010, currently has 50 students enrolled. To promote a sustainable way of living at the Akilah Institute, students will grow much of their own food on campus, rely on alternative methods of energy such as solar power, and utilize the benefits of composting toilets, rainwater harvesting, and grey water re-use.
