UNMOKAZI was founded in 1997 as a development organisation. Its general objective is the fight against extreme poverty in the rural and costal areas of Cabo Delgado. UMOKAZI works primarily with food security and sustainable use of the land, as well as promoting the formation of farmers associations. UMOKAZI has introduced techniques to improve the fertility of the soil and the quality of agricultural products. Furthermore the association has initiated production of vegetables and developed plague control in rural areas. UMOKAZI also facilitates local farmers access to comercialization. Other main activities include gender issues, empowerment and education of women, and awareness rising concerning primary health and HIV/AIDS. The partnership between MS and UMOKAZI began in 2001. The main objectives of the partnership were to improve the technical and organizational capacity of UMOKAZI. The main input of MS is assisting the activities of the focus groups in the local communities.
