The MICAIA Foundation works in different parts of Mozambique to help people achieve local prosperity in a sustainable world. For most people, a prosperous community is one in which there are real opportunities, especially for younger people, to generate income for their families. There is immense potential in Mozambique but other than export-focused industrial agriculture there is little investment in diversifying local economies. Therefore, MICAIA Foundation is helping create new community-based enterprises in food processing, organic farming, eco-tourism and natural products. In rural communities, in which MICAIA Foundation mostly works, prosperity is also connected with a sense of harmony with the natural environment. In many places, this harmony is being seriously disturbed by development that takes no account of the interests of the community. Therefore, MICAIA Foundation is working with people to strengthen community ecological governance, develop the skills and knowledge they need to fight for environmental justice, and take action to conserve, manage and invest in their natural environment. As younger generations struggle to balance their desire to be connected to the modern world with their origins in traditional communities, tensions arise and community values break down. For MICAIA Foundation, therefore, a priority is to work with younger people in particular to reconcile the two, both celebrating their culture and embracing innovation.
