The MICAIA Centre will be a unique facility in Mozambique, a centre of learning, reflection and innovation. Situated in the heart of Mozambique, the Centre will overlook the beautiful Lake Chicamba, at the gateway to the Chimanimani Mountains amid the rich biodiversity of Manica Province. The MICAIA Centre will also be at the heart of MICAIA's efforts to help people prosper in vibrant communities and sustainable local economies in Mozambique.
What the MICAIA Centre will offer: The Centre will offer practical programmes to help people – especially younger people – in rural areas develop economic alternatives to subsistence farming or contract farm labour. Key areas of interest will be organic farming, natural product development, food processing, and eco-tourism. Training and learning will be supported by demonstration projects, including appropriate technology, a resource centre making information and communication technologies available to rural people, and a 'business incubator' – providing groups and rural entrepreneurs with access to business development services. The Centre will also be a research institute, with a particular focus on natural product development. Finally, the MICAIA Centre will be a demonstration of environmentally appropriate and sustainable development both in its construction and operation.
Investment requirements: MICAIA now seeks £200,000 to construct and equip the MICAIA Centre in full. Facilities will include accommodation units housing up to 40 people, training rooms, covered areas for practical training, a laboratory, resource centre, stores, offices, kitchen and toilets.
