Eco-MICAIA Ltd is part of a hybrid organization including also MICAIA Foundation - which is an entirely not-for-profit entity.
Eco-MICAIA Ltd develops opportunities for producers (farmers) and communities to participate in inclusive businesses i.e. commercial enterprises in which workers, producers and/or communities as a whole can be included as suppliers, managers and if possible, as owners. MICAIA's belief is that if sustained livelihood opportunities are to be created it is necessary to shift at some point from subsidy (grants and donations) to investment. So-called 'income-generating projects' rarely generate significant income or work at scale. When MICAIA Foundation projects create apparent opportunities for generating a larger scale business opportunity, Eco-MICAIA gets involved.
Eco-MICAIA provides three types of service. First, we carry out feasibility studies, market research etc and in some cases work with producers and communities on development of business plans. Secondly, we facilitate access to finance. And thirdly we look for opportunities to create partnerships between communities/producers and private sector companies or entrepreneurs.
Since 2009 Eco-MICAIA has focused on tourism, natural products and agriculture. One eco-lodge has already been opened (NDZOU Camp - see www.mozecotours.com) and this is 60% owned by the community of Mpunga, Moribane and 40% by Eco-MICAIA. Another two tourism facilities are in development.
In the natural products sector Eco-MICAIA helped create and is a shareholder in the newly established Mozambique Honey Company. This company will be jointly owned by beekeepers and private investors. Eco-MICAIA has the role of mobilizing local beekeepers, building associations and ensuring that the beekeepers have the capacity to take up their own 45% shareholding in the Company.
Also in natural products Eco-MICAIA is working with the Mpunga community on developing the Moribane Natural Products Company with a focus on forest fruits. This business will be 70% owned by the community.
In addition to the direct work with communities and groups, Eco-MICAIA provides consulting services.
