The majority of people living in rural Malawi do not have access to electricity and are forced to burn kerosene for lighting. Kerosene is harmful to health, dangerous and increasingly expensive. In March 2008 SolarAid Malawi was set up to replace kerosene lamps with SunnyMoney microsolar. The team began by educating poor people in rural Malawi with the business and marketing tools necessary to become SunnyMoney entrepreneurs. With training, entrepreneurs have crated their own independent and sustainable microsolar businesses. In total, 5812 microsolar units have been sold, an outstanding achievement. Macrosolar In Spring 2010, the team began their macrosolar programme, and have since installed 18 schools, health clinics and community centres with clean and affordable solar-powered lighting systems. Operations will be scaling up throughout 2010 and into 2011.
