Freedom Gardens is an organic farm that relies on gravity-fed irrigation, composting, and farming practices that are free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. All types of food, both local and exotic grow in this area, including maize, bananas, citrus fruits, strawberries, broccoli, sugar cane, peas, spices, and many other fruits and vegetables. The local community provides all the labor requirements for Freedom Gardens as people from the neighborhood come to work for money or food. This arrangement has also acted as an educational opportunity for those who come to work in this garden; many villagers have borrowed the science and technology knowledge for establishing their own small enterprises both upstream and downstream. In difficult times Freedom Gardens is capable of supporting six surrounding villages. Normally maize is harvest once a year but irrigation raises productivity to three or more times per year. The market produce is also sold in hotels, markets, and shopping malls in Lilongwe as well the Kamuzu International Airport.
