Kumbali Country Lodge is a private lodge, situated on a 650Ha forest reserve & dairy farm in Malawi, Southern Africa. Only 10 minutes from the capital city, Lilongwe, along a quiet traffic-free road. Stylish, relaxed and informal, it is the ideal home for the professional traveller and perfect stopover on the way to other destinations in Malawi. Nature's Gift Permaculture is situated on the 650 hectare farm of Nature's Gift Farm near City Centre, Lilongwe, Malawi. The owners of the farm, the Pickerings, have generously donated 30 hectares for use. The rest of the farm is home to Kumbali Country Lodge and Nature's Gift Dairy, which produces meat and dairy products from free range cows managed with organic principles. As an organization, we focus on training, demonstration, research and consulting. NGP is operating on an ethical business in model in which we follow the three Permaculture ethics in all aspects of our business. The ethics, Earth Care, People Care and Fair/Surplus Share serve as our guide us through the design of our land and interaction with clients and community members to the payment of our staff and monitoring our bottom line. "The Centre" is what we call our 30 hectares which lie just outside of Lilongwe, Malawi's capital city. Remodelled from horse stables we have thatched the roof and converted the main building into an office, library, seed room, tool room, and accommodation with composting ablutions.
With help from our Thatching course, we have recently built a new classroom which can hold 35 people. This is where we hold trainings about permaculture and its subtopics as well as demonstrate solutions for the household and small-scale levels as well as for large-scale and commercial landholders.
The centre is the first of its kind in Malawi and will develop over a 5 year period to be economically self- sustainable. It answers the increasing demand for qualified permaculture consultants and trainers as well as appropriate training space. The owners of Nature's Gift Farm are passionate about Malawi's potential to develop sustainably and with existing resources, and have been working towards increasing biodiversity by conserving and promoting a wide variety of indigenous fauna and flora on the farm for the last 12 years. Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems, which have the diversity, stability and the strength of natural ecosystems.
It is the harmonious combination of land and people, supplying their food, energy, shelter and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without sustainable agriculture there is no possibility of a sustainable human culture.
Permaculture helps us to understand and to create harmonic integrations between nature and people in the most sustainable way. It is appropriate for use in urban or rural locations, as well as for all scales of projects. Permaculture introduces traditional practices of natural resource management, integrated with appropriate modern technology. This is a holistic, and environment friendly way of designing and building our human environments, as well as improving living standards. Permaculture addresses housing, water supply, health, waste management, farming, energy, aquaculture, rivers, forests, livestock and much more.
