ReefDoctor is a small UK based, not-for-profit, Marine Conservation organisation conducting coral reef research, implementing sustainable management principles, community awareness, schools education and social development work with the local Vezo fishing communities of the coral reef system of the Bay of Ranobe SW Madagascar part of the 3rd largest coral reef system in the world. ReefDoctor provides training and certification in diving and underwater surveys techniques essential for conducting marine research. Trained volunteers then take part in one of the several marine conservation and fisheries management research projects being lead by ReefDoctor at that time. Acting as technical support to local fishermen's assocations, results of our research are used to guide the implementation of fisheries management measures, and to educate the general public. In addition to our marine conservation and fisheries management outreach efforts, ReefDoctor assists the local communities through public health initiatives, environmental education of adults and children, and development of alternative livelihoods in order to reduce the pressures exerted on the local marine environment.
