FIkambanan'ny TErak'i MAnambolo is a community-based natural resource management initiative that re-established a traditional indigenous land use system to help preserve 5,100 hectares of mid-altitude forests and 400 hectares of swamps in the 7,500 hectare Manambolo Valley and provide food security to the local Betsileo ethnic group.
Key Activities and Innovations: The organization works on forest restoration through the establishment of nurseries with local tree species, including the native Ravenea madagascariensis palm. The group has constructed irrigation infrastructure and is guided in its work by commitment to full participation and equitable management. FITEMA works in partnership with the national government to monitor and patrol forest areas.
