Machobane Agricultural Development Foundation (MADF)
Core Activities: The primary aim of MADF is to improve food security, health and general welfare for the economically poorest of Lesotho Society. a) To increase food production from small land holdings of poor farmers. b) To promote diversification of crops for food security and improvement of diets. c) To encourage judicious use of the natural resource base. d) To provide a structure for mass education in cooperation action general community development. e) To stimulate continued research into improvement of the Machobane Farming System and plan for mass education.
Machobane Farming System: Started
Activities in Lesotho : Care of OVC: Education: 20 school attendees receive breakfast on school days; purchase of school bags, uniforms and stationary for 20 children Health: 20 OVC taken for regular medical check-ups; and the 11 who are HIV positive are enrolled for ARV treatment Psychosocial Support: Voluntary social workers visit on a weekly basis to evaluate the psychological well being of 20 OVC Clothing: Provision of clothing to 20 OVC from donors on a quarterly basis 1) Training in Machobane Farming System (MFS) to primary, secondary and high school pupils 2) Training of smallholder farmers in the vegetable production using MFS techniques 3) Training of HIV and AIDS support groups in homegardening with MFS techniques 4) Introduction of vegetable crops to schools and farmers for homegardening e.g. chives, parsley, amaranthus 5) Train farmers in MFS techniques so they can train other farmers
Future Plans: Train school children, OVC, herdboys, youth in MFS techniques so they may be able to fend for themselves using locally available material Train support groups in MFS techniques so they may demonstrate to households affected by HIV and AIDS how to grow healthy food in the gardens Train teachers and staff in health centres in MFS techniques so they may pass the acquired skills to the people they serve Arouse awareness among smallholder farmers and communities at large on the effectiveness of working together (Matsema) for the common good of all Work together with other organisations and learn from them, how to help our fellow Basotho to improve their livelihoods Introduction of crops that may withstand and tolerate adverse Lesotho weather conditions and improve households' diets and generate income
