Ke Thaba offers demonstrations of batik art in process. Geertje Keingeld grew up in the Northern Transvaal Bushveld without any formal art training. She met her rugby-hero husband, Johan, at the Teachers Training College in Bloemfontein in 1965. He was the first to recognise her art talent and gave Geertje her first set of oils. Although she always did some artistic work to express her feelings and creativity, the major artist did not really come to the fore, because of teaching, raising children, building a house and later working as a tracer and secretary in an engineer's and an architect's office. In 1994, the opportunity came for Geertje to resume her old passion for batik, because of the mystique, charm and uniqueness of this art form. Her work is marketed from her studio gallery. Her subjects vary from wildlife and flowers to spiritual themes. The cracked effect and her personal meticulous attention to every detail make every piece a masterpiece. Geertje can be visited in Clarens or her work can be obtained by mail order. Ke Thaba also has overnight rooms – private, with their own entrance, but part of the homestead. The facility is self-catering and has a braai (barbecue) area. Photos and description from http://www.africancrafts.com/
